We took a few hours out, last night, and headed to the beach for a quick swim and sunet.

Gracies

I'd have to say that Gracies is easily one of our favorite restaurants in Providence. Jane was given a gift certificate for her birthday (Thanks Corey!)
What you are seeing here (bigger image on my website) is:
1. The cheese sampler. What I learned from this is; a) I tend to like cheeze from vermont. b) Stinky French cheeze, not so much.
2. Vegetable Sampler. While a second course, Jane got it for her first course, and it was amazing. --She didn't share the watermelon, so I'm assuming it was amazing. --The grilled cheeze was made with some of that aforementioned vermont cheeze. It was incredibly buttey and rich. -- The tomato soup was better than any other tomato soup I've had. Which isn't the most powerful statement, since I don't travel the world and critique tomato soup, but if I did, I'm pretty sure this would be up there with the greats. --The thing that looks like an egg roll, is... basically... an eggroll. It was called a roulade and it had leeks and other goodness inside, but the outside was still reminiscent of an eggroll, which is not to say it wasn't good, just not as exotic as the others. --The bean salad (with leeks and garlic and creme fraiche) was really great. Before we knew what the dressing was, we spent each bite debating whether it was sour cream or yogurt. It turns out, we were both kind of right. --The tomato and chickpea salad was intense. The chef had a bit of fun with this salad. We've deduced that they soaked the chickpeas in white balsamic vinegar. The result is that when you initially eat the salad, it seems a little under-dressed, then when you bite into the chickpeas you get an explosion of flavor. Pretty crafty!
3. My appetizer was a smoked salmon and sweet corn sald. The salmon and corn were a great combination of salty and sweet. On top of that was a tomato gelee (I think), which is basically a jello made with tomato juice. I know, it sounds...kind of...BUT IT WASN'T. It was much more flavorful thank you'd expect and melded really well with the salad. Very inventive and tasty!
4. I had the lamb. It was nicely cooked and especially tasty over the celery root puree.
5. Jane had the cod (with fancy name that escapes me). The bites she allowed me were fantastic. It was kind of poached and well peppered. Super tasty.
6. We finished dinner sharing a nice glass of port that made us giddy for the walk home.

All in all, a great night on the town/belated birthday dinner.

Gaze

This image started its life as a picture of a doorknob. While I'd like to take credit for the focus, the D70 actually chose which bubble to focus on. I think the shallow depth of field, and the blurry forground continually lead the eye back into the sphere. What do you think?

Dearth

Sorry for the lack of posting! Between travel to Maine and issues with monitor calibration, I've not quite been myself lately.
If anyone could help adivse me on monitor calibration issues, I'd certainly appreciate it.
Here's my situation. I'm running a dual CRT monitor setup and I can't get my screens to match. I've made very dilligent efforts, but to no avail. What I'm finding both frustrating and paralysing is that I've shot a whole bunch of wedding pictures that look fantastic on 1 screen (my older screen, a sceptre Dragon Eye from 1998) and washed-out on my newer screen (a ViewSonic G90f from about 2002). While I want to trust the screen that makes the pictures look beautiful, I don't want to spend hours and hours doing work that will ultimately be off.

So, fellow visual people, how do you know your colors are on?
Thanks!

While I have a ways to go in regards to understanding and processing RAW files, I am loving the interface, speed and DOF of the D70.

Flux

Much as the flux capacitor makes time travel possible, cups of coffee make Mondays possible. Plus, I just kind of liked the shot.
